Zinc Polishing Laps

Zinc Alloy Polishing Laps are renowned in the lapidary industry for their exceptional performance. These laps, crafted from solid zinc, offer superior hardness compared to tin laps, making them ideal for cutting and polishing colored stones with precision and efficiency. They excel in producing flat facets swiftly, even on the toughest gemstones, ensuring a high-quality finish.

Thick Solid Zinc Polishing Lap boasts an advantage over some other tin Laps as it avoids the common issue of developing an orange peel surface. It features a 1/2" arbor hole. Tin and its alloys belong to a class of materials with recrystallization temperatures below room temperature. This characteristic prevents them from work hardening at room temperature, a crucial factor when embedding diamonds into a lapping plate. Because the lapping material doesn't work harden during the charging process, it allows diamonds to embed effectively. The challenge with many low recrystallization metals and alloys is that they struggle to securely hold diamonds. However, Tin TAC-3000 and tin-antimony lapping plate tackle this issue by maintaining a tightly controlled grain structure. Consequently, the embedded diamonds are pinned at the grain boundaries, preventing smearing and rolling. This results in a fixed diamond lapping process that offers lower cutting profiles, more efficient cutting (with energy applied to cutting rather than rolling), less wear on the lapping plates, and a finish reminiscent of a polished surface.

For professional cutters, the Solid Zinc Polishing Lap has long been the lap of choice. It surpasses tin in hardness and excels at rapidly producing flat facets on even the hardest of colored stones. Moreover, Solid Zinc Polishing Lap can achieve a good polish on a wide range of stones, from hard to soft. Additionally, these full-thickness Solid Zinc Polishing Lap are robust enough to serve as standalone laps without the need for bonding to a base plate or require a master lap base. They can even be re-machined if necessary. These Lap are particularly preferred for Polishing tougher gems like corundum and cubic zirconia.

The Perfect Solid Zinc Polishing Lap are meticulously crafted using top-quality industrial-grade Zinc. This ensures dimensional accuracy and corrosion resistance. These Laps are especially ideal for polishing facet-grade soft stones.

The new Solid Zinc Polishing Lap needs to add water and use 60-80# sandpaper, polish from the outer edge to the inside, until no scratches are seen, and then polish it with 240# sandpaper, and the same processing procedure after the old disc is repaired. The polishing powder should be moistened with diamond oil to form a paste, and continue polishing on 50-150# sandpaper. The disc needs to maintain a certain humidity. The polishing powder should be applied evenly and polished until the surface is black, then it can be used.

FAQ

Q: What is a Zinc Polishing Lap?
A zinc polishing lap is a circular disc made from a solid zinc alloy, used for polishing gemstones, minerals, and other hard materials. Unlike lapidary wheels (flat laps) that use bonded diamond particles, zinc laps achieve a polishing effect through a mechanical process.
Q: What are the Disadvantages of Zinc Polishing Laps?
Limited Material Compatibility: Zinc laps might not be suitable for very hard stones as they can scratch the material. Slower Polishing: Compared to diamond laps, zinc laps may require more time and effort to achieve the desired polish. Heat Generation: Friction during polishing can generate heat, so using a water drip or lubricant is recommended to prevent overheating the workpiece.
Q: How to Use a Zinc Lap:
Attach the zinc lap to your lapidary grinder or polishing machine according to the manufacturer's instructions. Apply a polishing compound (optional, but can enhance results) to the surface of the lap. Dampen the lap with water or a lubricant to reduce friction and heat generation. Gently press the workpiece against the spinning lap and move it continuously to achieve an even polish. Regularly clean the lap with water to remove polishing residue.
Q: What are the Advantages of Zinc Polishing Laps?
Effective Polishing: Zinc laps can produce a good polish on a wide range of materials, particularly softer to medium-hard stones. They excel at achieving a high-gloss finish. Easy to Use: Zinc laps are relatively simple to use and don't require harsh chemicals or diamond compounds. Cost-Effective: Compared to diamond laps, zinc laps are a more affordable option. Long-Lasting: Zinc is a durable material, and these laps can last for a long time with proper care.
Q: What Materials Can You Use a Zinc Polishing Lap With?
Softer gemstones (e.g., jade, turquoise, opals) Glass Metals (for achieving a high shine) Some plastics
Q: Tips for Using Zinc Polishing Laps:
Use a light touch and avoid applying excessive pressure. Start with a coarser grit lapidary wheel before using the zinc lap for polishing. Different polishing compounds can be used with zinc laps for achieving specific finishes. Maintain the lap by occasionally dressing it with a truing tool (a flat stone) to keep the polishing surface smooth.
