Typically, a cabbing machine has an array of six grinding and polishing wheels arranged next to each other on a long shaft. The shaft may be directly attached to a motor or it may be mounted on bearings and attached to a belt and pulley drive. The abrasive surface is on the cylindrical perimeter of the wheels.
Each wheel on the shaft employs a different mesh size abrasive and the wheels progress incrementally from coarse for shaping to medium for smoothing to fine and extra fine for polishing. A water drip system or splashing system keeps the wheels wet and a shroud catches water flung from the wheels as they spin.
The coarse grinding wheels are often metal with diamond grit either sintered or electroplated to the grinding surface. The fine abrasive wheels are often composite materials with some cushion and the grit is bonded to the grinding/polishing surface with resin. Sometimes a leather disk charged with polishing compound such as cerium oxide is mounted on the end of the machine for a final buffing finish.

Features :
1. Grinding Wheels: Cabbing machines typically have multiple grinding wheels of varying grit sizes. These wheels are used for the initial shaping and grinding of the gemstone. Coarse grit wheels are used first to remove material quickly, followed by finer grit wheels for smoother surfaces.
2. Polishing Wheels: After the initial grinding, polishing wheels with special polishing compounds are used to achieve a high-gloss finish on the cabochon. These wheels often have a leather or felt covering to hold the polishing compound.
3. Water System: Many Cabbing machines incorporate a water system to cool and lubricate the grinding and polishing wheels. This water helps prevent the gemstone from overheating and also removes debris created during the cutting and polishing process.
4. Adjustable Dop Sticks: Dop sticks are used to hold and secure the gemstone during cutting and polishing. Cabbing machines typically have adjustable dop sticks that allow you to position the gemstone at the desired angles for shaping and polishing.
5. Motor and Power: Cabbing machines are equipped with a motor that drives the grinding and polishing wheels. The power and speed of the motor may vary depending on the machine's size and design.
6. Adjustable Angles: Some cabbing machines have adjustable angles and settings to help you achieve specific cabochon shapes and angles.
7. Safety Features: Safety features such as splash guards, eye protection shields, and emergency stop buttons are essential for safe operation.
Applications:
Lapidary Cabbing grinder machines are used by lapidaries, jewelers, and hobbyists for the following applications:
-
Gemstone Cabochon Making: The primary purpose of a Cabbing machine is to shape and polish gemstone cabochons, which are used in jewelry making.
-
Lapidary Art: Lapidarists use these machines to create intricate designs and patterns on gemstones.
-
Jewelry Making: Cabochons produced using Cabbing machines are often used in rings, pendants, earrings, and other jewelry pieces.
-
Hobby and Collectibles: Enthusiasts and collectors may use Cabbing machines to create custom gemstone cabochons for personal collections or as gifts.
-
Restoration: Cabbing machines can be used to restore the appearance of older or damaged cabochons.
When using a lapidary Cabbing grinder machines , it's essential to follow safety guidelines, wear appropriate protective gear, and have some experience or training in lapidary work. Gemstone cutting and polishing can be a rewarding craft, but it requires skill and attention to detail to achieve high-quality results.
Lapidary Slab Trim Sav
Not all rocks and gemstones are sized equally, so when it comes to cutting your rock collection, there are two types of saws you’ll need; a trim saw and a slab saw.
A trim saw has a small, thin blade, that is made for cutting small stones into smaller chunks, or for creating a flat edge for a cabochon. Hi-Tech’s Diamond trim saw is a good starter option.
A slab saw has a larger and thicker blade, making it suitable for trimming down rough rock slabs, or large stones that won’t fit into a trim saw . This slab saw option has a vise to help you trim the rock safely.
Hans offer lapidary trim saws and slab Saws for sale at competitive prices, trim or slab saw for cutting and slicing the smallest to the largest rocks and glass piece.A good trim saw is a basic piece of equipment for every glass and lapidary artist. Whether you are going to make a cabochon, a flat specimen for mounting, a faceted stone, or slicing glass for a unique piece, you will want to reduce your material to a workable, and approximate shape before proceeding to the grinding, sanding and polishing operations. It is fundamental that the trim saw be extremely sturdy, that the saw arbor be mounted with precision and the bearings sealed against intrusion of abrasive waste. It is essential to have ample cutting deck space and a tank that is easily cleaned.
Features:
-
Blade: Lapidary trim saws are equipped with a circular saw blade with diamond-impregnated edges. Diamond blades are essential for cutting through hard and abrasive materials like rocks, minerals, and gemstones.
-
Water Cooling: Many lapidary trim saws feature a water cooling system to minimize heat generated during cutting. Water also helps to lubricate the blade and wash away debris, resulting in cleaner cuts and prolonged blade life.
-
Adjustable Table: The machine typically has an adjustable table or vise where the rough material is secured for cutting. This table can be moved horizontally and vertically to achieve precise cuts.
-
Feed Mechanism: Some trim saws have a feed mechanism that allows for controlled and consistent movement of the material through the blade.
-
Safety Features: Safety shields and guards protect the operator from any debris or water spray generated during cutting. It's important to use proper safety equipment, such as safety glasses and a dust mask, when operating a lapidary trim saw .
-
Variable Speed: Some models offer variable speed settings to control the cutting speed based on the material being processed.
Applications:
Lapidary trim saws have several applications:
-
Slabbing: The primary use is to cut large rough stones into thinner slabs. These slabs can then be further worked on by lapidaries to create cabochons, faceted gems, or decorative specimens.
-
Trimming: They are used to trim and shape rough material to remove unwanted portions, irregularities, or fractures, leaving behind clean and flat surfaces.
-
Preparing Specimens: Geologists and mineral collectors use trim saws to prepare specimens for display or study by cutting rocks and minerals into thin sections.
-
Lapidary Work: Lapidaries use these machines as part of the gemstone cutting and shaping process to create cabochons or faceted gemstones.
-
Custom Jewelry: lapidary artists use trim saws to create custom-shaped gemstone pieces for jewelry making.
lapidary trim saws are available in various sizes, from small benchtop models suitable for hobbyists to larger floor-standing units for professional lapidaries. The choice of a trim saw depends on the size and type of material you plan to cut and the level of precision required for your lapidary or geological work.
